The rise of David is a vital new chapter in the biblical story as God calls the shepherd-king to be his answer to the disasters that have befallen the people of Israel and to put his plan for the world back on track. The way that this works out in the story of David, however, is deeply mysterious, and ultimately points further ahead to 'great David's greater son' in Jesus who came to be the fulfilment of all of his purposes.
